Stephen Hayward - Photographer
A web design project with HTML, CSS, JS.
Photographers have great images to work with and always make for a great portfolio website. It can be tricky to show off the images within a minimal canvas and show the extent of the work. Also photographers often have strong views on how best to present their work.
Stephen had seen a few websites that he liked and based on these I found similar templates for him to choose and base his website on. The sites he liked were single page designs and I thought a HTML, CSS, minimal javascript site would be a good solution, so we chose a template and I used this as a basis to customise.
Starting with a template can be great to get the layout and navigation sorted quickly but often comes with many stylised areas that need to be changed or removed and this can take more time than creating from scratch.
The minimal text throughtout the site lets the images speak for themselves. The subtle transitions when moving down the page make for a smooth UI / UX experience.
Of course updating the website is a major consideration. I had kept the code clean and commented well so each area can be easily identified, however managing image sizes and editing html was a bit too tricky and scary to do if it is not your code or you are not a developer, so I added a CMS - Perch - and gave control over these areas to easily update.
There are CMS' evolving all the time and many different solutions than a Wordpress site for example, but which one to use. . ? Check my CMS - ref list for inspiration, I can design and setup your website and add a dashboard to help updating and editing so your site is fresh and up to date.
